Creating a book design
The book itself can be as interesting as you like, but without the right design, it will not be something that you want to keep on the shelf, buy for your home, or for a gift. This includes both the cover and the interior design - a full range of work to turn a simply typed text into a real book that is really a pleasure to deal with!
What is needed for registration?
First of all, of course, you need a cover design. The cover can be safely called the face of the publication, thanks to which the main marketing is carried out, attracting the client to ensure that the book interests him. Then, when there is a cover, you can open the book and be interested in these points:
- the design of the flyleaf, that is, a sheet of paper that connects the block of the book and its binding cover. You can make the flyleaf in full color, make it from an unusual material - the flyleaf can even be silk. But the basic design method - white offset paper - also looks very good;
- the design of the title page, that is, the first page of the book. It is on the first page that contains the most important data: the name of the author, the title of the book, the year and place of publication. It is very important not to “overload” the reader with decorative elements so as not to distract from important information;
- the design of the block (reversal) - two stripes should look like one! The bottom margin is made larger than the top margin so that blocks of text don't "fall" down. Books with wide margins look as elegant as possible so that the text looks beautiful and seems to feel free. The internal field is made twice as narrow as the external one, since the internal fields merge into one when looking at the reversal. Here, too, it is very important to take care that the artistic elements do not “load” the reader;
- the design of the shmattitula - the page that is located before the beginning of the chapter, and on it, in fact, its title is written. Here you can already insert a variety of decorative elements! Shmattitul, like the flyleaf, can be made of unusual material. If you want to save money on this page, you can make just a large heading instead.
The design must match the content, and this is one of the main rules of typography. It is important that the reader reaches for your publication among the undoubtedly wide range of other books! And the essence of the work should be revealed in artistic performance because the designer has a very big responsibility. At least he should read the book! And that's why you need to carefully approach the choice of the artist in matters of book design.
