Basic design elements 

Point, line and plane are the basic structural elements of design.

From these elements, designers create images, icons, textures, patterns, graphics, animation and typography. Graphs use points, lines, and planes to show data and their relationships. Textures and patterns are made up of large groups of dots and lines that repeat. Typography consists of individual letters (dots) that form lines (lines) and blocks of text.

Designers create their mockups in different programs such as Figma to create design website and mobile app designs. Adobe Indesign is used for layout of books. Adobe Illustrator is used to create a logo and brand elements. Thanks to these programs, designers can create new designs, implement new ideas, and change them quickly and constantly. Nowadays there are many opportunities to use new technologies in design, which makes work easier.

The programs describe images in categories such as point, line, plane, shape, volume and color and transparency. You can experiment with these elements in different combinations and solutions.

A dot shows a position in space. In the graph, the point takes the shape of a circle, a mark visible to the eye. The point can be either indistinguishable or maximally concentrated. Depending on its size, location, and relationship to its surroundings, a point can be used to differentiate it from other elements.

The sequence of points forms a line. A line is an infinite series of points. A line has length but no width. A line is the union of two points.

A plane is a flat surface that has height and width.

A plane is a path that moves a line, that is, a line that has width. A form is a plane that has boundaries.

By understanding the basic knowledge of design elements, we can create the right objects, designs that will bring efficiency and benefit to our users.

In design, it’s the small and basic details that matter, so it’s always important to go back to basics in order to properly interact with the design and the client, and achieve important goals.
